Hickory Museum of Art has created the Art for All After School Program which provides homework assistance to children from low income families attending kindergarten through fifth grade. After homework assignments have been completed, students participate in art activities that will assist them in improving their knowledge of math and reading.To implement this project the HMA needs volunteers able to serve as tutors Monday through Thursday from 3 to 5:30 pm, to help students solve math and reading assignments. They also need volunteers to help with art making activities. Tutors should be enthusiastic about working with children, patient, and responsible. The Catawba County River Keeper Foundation seeks to educate and advocate to protect the Catawba-Wateree River Basin's lakes, rivers and streams for everyone who depends on and enjoys them. They will be participating at this year’s Oktoberfest Saturday October 11, 2014 from 10am-4pm and needs your help spreading the word about the foundation through presentation of information on CCRKF and giving details about their work in the community. Catawba County United Way’s Volunteer Center: Heading up the effort to park cars at the Greater Kia Golf Classic at Rock Barn – this Sr PGA Champions Tour event is coming up Monday 10/13-Sunday 10/19. Volunteers are needed for the parking area and volunteers get a free pass to the tournament for the entire week. See below for the number of volunteers needed for each day/ time slot:

Warm, winter clothes! Cooler weather has begun and other than our regular customer needs, our voucher homeless clients have extra need for your gently used coats, thermal underwear, long sleeve tops, pants, underwear, gloves, toboggans, etc.
If you have a donation of gently used furniture, we’ll come pick it up! All of the clothing, furniture AND household goods that we sell helps to keep our food pantry, healthcare clinic and pharmacy open to those who are in need!

Awareness Dinner and Candlelight Vigil
The Family Guidance Center of Hickory and First Step Domestic Violence Program will hold their Annual Awareness Dinner and Candlelight Vigil in Observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month on Thursday October 30, 2014 at 6pm. Speakers of the hour will include Ron and Jan Kimble, Jamie’s Parents. Dinner will be available for $10.00 per person but will not be required in order to attend the vigil to remember those we have lost to domestic violence and to honor those who have lived to tell their story.
