MLK Day of Service
MLK Day of Service is coming up fast this year. MLK Day is Monday January 21st, 2013. Our MLK Day of Service will be the Saturday before MLK Day. That date is January 19th, 2013. Participation is always high, so don't miss out. From 9:30 am to 12:00 pm we will be going to at least 5 different sites in the community to help with whatever is needed. Our confirmed service sites this year include Centro Latino, The Corner Table, Hickory Soup Kitchen, Habitat for Humanity, and Greater Hickory Cooperative Christian Ministry. We are trying to have 6 project sites so please stay tunned for the added sixth. Project details are still being finalized although some painting and sorting will be included. When our projects are complete, around 12:00 pm, we will return to LRU, convene in the Hickory Room, and reflect on our projects. We will also hear what other groups did with their mornings. Refreshments and merriment should be expected. Please join us in honoring and remembering Martin Luther King Jr. and everything he did for all communities, by going out and serving in our own. Email AmeriCorps VISTA, Ariel Mitchell, at firstname.lastname@example.org for any questions, or to sign up for a specific project site. Groups range from 5-10 students. See you that Saturday!
Stuffing Stockings for Service
Annually at Exam Cram Midnight Breakfast we hold a service project called Stuffing Stockings for Service. This project involves collecting stocking stuffers, and stuffing stockings for kids in the community. This year our recipients are City of Refuge and Centro Latino tutoring programs. Together these programs serve 55 elementary kids. Our stuffer donations have been a little lower than we had hoped for, but our monetary donations have been generous. We have almost wrapped up our stuffer donations as the time to stuff stockings gets ever closer. Come out at 10:00 pm on the night of Exam Cram, December 7th, and stuff a stocking for a child in the community. It's a great way to destress from exams and an even better way to give back to the community!
American Red Cross Blood Drive!
Tuesday December 4th, 2012 from 10am-2:30pm. Email the AmeriCorps VISTA, Ariel Mitchell, at email@example.com to sign up and volunteer for the Drive or to make an appointment to donate. Appointments are strongly encouraged. All blood drives are held in the Shuford Gym Lobby. Must have a valid I.D. (LR Student ID's will count).

Volunteer at Exodus Homes
Exodus Homes is a non-profit in the community that is currently in great need of volunteers. This faith-based, non-profit targets individuals who are homeless and just returning from prison or treatment programs for addictions. These people are looking for permanent housing in a safe environment that helps them with needs that range anywhere from physical and emotional to spiritual. Exodus Homes provides that housing and many other services that help these individuals acclimate back into the community and stay on their path to recovery. Because Exodus Homes is such an asset to this community, it's important that we get involved with them as well. They offer a variety of volunteer opportunities in which you will learn something new everyday. If you are interested in volunteering with Exodus Homes and learning more about the population they serve and what services they offer, please contact Rev. Susan Smith by phone at (828) 962-8196 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
